Many use Henry Rose because it is a “cleaner” brand but, how clean is it!? Let’s dive in! First, I will share with you my standards: I reach for 100% Natural fragrances only, that means 0% synthetic. Not because synthetics are always bad but because there is simply not enough long-term testing behind most of them. I prefer natural when it comes to fragrance. So, where does Henry Rose fall here?
I am not here to say Henry Rose is toxic by any means but I am here to say, a lot more info is needed for me to feel ok using it, here’s why.
What is Denatured Alcohol?!
According to this page of their website, all of their scents use Denatured Ethyl Alcohol. Denatured Ethyl Alcohol also listed as Alcohol Denat. is actually just drinking alcohol that has been chemically altered to make it undrinkable. Companies do this simply to avoid the high taxes placed on consumable alcohol to be able to still use it in products like cosmetics, perfumes, cleaning solutions, and hand sanitizers. The get around the taxes by adding bitter or toxic substances to make it no longer drinkable, how wild is that?!
So, what’s the problem?! Well, to produce this, they will often mix in carcinogenic chemicals like Benzene, into the alcohol, to make it denatured. Benzene is a known human carcinogen linked to leukemia. It’s also controversial in the clean beauty space because it can be harsh on the skin, potentially disrupting the skin barrier, causing dryness or irritation, and as we mentioned above, may contain trace residues of toxic or possibly carcinogenic chemicals used in the denaturing process. While effective in certain products, many clean beauty brands avoid it due to its potential long-term impact on skin health.
Synthetic Fragrance-
On top of the Denatured Alcohol, they’re also using synthetic fragrance and while they claim it is safer, there is just not enough long term data to support this yet. Some ingredients they use like tetramethyl acetyloctahydronaphthalenes is classified as a fragrance allergen in the EU. It must be listed on product labels if present above a certain threshold, as it can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
Even the EWG scores this ingredient a 3, citing Allergies & Immunotoxicity concerns, yet because Henry Rose is a client, somehow, they still get a seal of approval by the EWG? It’s not classified as a carcinogen or reproductive toxin, and in standard cosmetic use levels, it’s considered low risk for most people but those with fragrance sensitivities, eczema, or compromised skin barriers may experience dermatitis, redness, or itching so it’s a no for me.
Another example is Methylcyclopentadecenone, also known as 3-methylcyclopentadecenone, which is a synthetic fragrance ingredient commonly used in cosmetics and personal care products for its musk-like scent. It belongs to the macrocyclic ketones family and is utilized to impart a long-lasting fragrance. PubMed
Studies indicate that methylcyclopentadecenone may cause allergic skin reactions in a small fraction of individuals, particularly with repeated exposure. As a result, it is classified as a skin sensitizer (Category 1B) under the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals.
Ethylene Brassylate is also in some of their scents. Ethylene Brassylate is a synthetic musk commonly used in cosmetics and fragrances for its sweet, musky scent and ability to make scents last longer. While it’s approved for use in many countries, it raises concerns in clean beauty due to its potential for endocrine disruption, bioaccumulation in the body, and toxicity to aquatic life. Though generally considered low-risk for skin irritation, repeated exposure over time may pose long-term health and environmental risks. Because of its synthetic origin and persistence in the environment, many non-toxic and eco-conscious brands choose to avoid it in favor of safer, plant-based alternatives.
So because of the cheap form of alcohol they’re using, mixed with “safer” synthetics, it’s just a no for me. Again, they are BETTER and I am not saying they are the most “toxic” but for me, there is just no use for them, especially with their price point! These are mostly super cheap ingredients too, so to see their prices as high as they are is disappointing. I’d rather get an all natural fragrance instead for that price!
What To Use Instead?
As I mentioned earlier, I only use 100% Natural scents to keep the above risks to a minimum. Of course, the best option is to wear nothing but, I like to have a clean scent to use each day. I personally love floral, romantic and fresh scents so I will share some of my faves below. I will also share Kyle’s faves if you need cologne suggestions.
